Structured programs are offered to students in grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8, providing an up-close encounter with the past. Museum visit programs revolve around exhibit activities specifically tailored for each grade level.
The History Lab component will create hands-on experiences students won’t soon forget.
• Second Grade -Greenville Then and Now: A look at how our community and its residents have changed from the 19th century to today.
• Third Grade -Digging our History: A brief overview of the connection between archaeology and history as students conduct a mini "dig" to discover artifacts from the Cherokee and Catawba Indian tribes.
• Fourth Grade -The Confederacy - at Home & on the Field: Learn what needs Civil War soldiers had while they were at war and how groups of ladies at home -Soldiers' Aid Societies - helped to fill those needs.
• Fifth Grade -Training Our Soldiers: The Upcountry was home to many training camps during both world wars; students learn how the camps and the soldiers impacted, and were impacted by, the Upcountry.
• Eighth Grade -Sharecroppers to Mill Workers: The importance of the textile industry in Upcountry South Carolina is examined in terms of its societal and economic impacts. (Programs can offer a focus on Child Labor or Civil Rights.)
The Exhibit component encourages students to investigate history through an organized scavenger hunt while touring the Museum.
Cross-curricular lesson plans have been developed to provide teachers with a unique opportunity to not only to meet the state standards, but also to prepare their students for an exciting and productive learning experience at the Museum.
