WWII School Programs

A series of standards-based educational programs have been developed for students in grades 5, 7, 8 and11.  Each grade level offers a distinct focus that is appropriate to the age of students and the standards for that grade; each program incorporates the use of primary resources such as newspapers, oral histories, and photographs. Documents and other materials will be made available to teachers and students for pre-visit and post-visit use. Issues addressed in the various programs include not only the principle events that precipitated U.S. involvement in the War, but also the social and economic impacts and advancements in technology.  Topics include: civilian contributions to the war effort (war bonds, victory gardens); use of propaganda in the war effort; role of women and minorities in the workforce; effect of WWII on the Civil Rights Movement; impact on the economy of the Upcountry (focusing on textiles), etc.  Students will have the opportunity to tour the special exhibition as well as the relevant portions of UHM’s permanent exhibits during their visit.  The exhibit will provide access to oral histories and authentic World War II artifacts.  Some programming will also offer the opportunity to hear directly from a Veteran or a civilian about their experiences during theWar.
