Gertrude Sanford Legendre was a woman whose adventurous life spanned the 20th century, beginning in Aiken, SC in 1902 and ending at her plantation outside Charleston in 2000. Local author, Kathryn Smith, explores the life of Gertrude in her 2019 book, Gertie: The Fabulous Life of Gertrude Legendre, Heiress, Explorer, Socialite, Spy, and on August 18, Smith shares stories of Gertie’s daring and fearless adventures of being the first American woman in uniform held as a POW by the Germans during World War II.
