Lunchbox Learning – Viet Nam: Music that Defined an Era

August 10, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Viet Nam: Music That Defined An Era

Presented by Dr. Erin McCoy, USC Beaufort

Dr. Erin McCoy, USC Beaufort, explores the impact of the American music scene during the tumultuous years of the Viet Nam War. From the anti-war sentiments of the early classic rock groups like The Animals to the folk music of Bob Dylan, music served as a forum to express the national discontent with American involvement in Viet Nam. However, not all music shared this anti-war sentiment. The music of Merle Haggard and other country artists was often considered pro-war.

Dr. McCoy’s program will give an overview of different genres of music from the Viet Nam war era. Top 40 hits will be interspersed with deep cuts from the Viet Nam War era, and the presentation will further include global, cultural, social, and historical contexts for the songs presented.

This month’s program is sponsored by South Carolina Humanities, a not-for-profit organization; inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture and heritage.

Lunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests.
